Susan Schmidt is an award winning artist who transitioned from watercolors to painting on glass when she introduced her extensive line of elegant hand painted glassware. Her own personal work was sold primarily in retail shows in the New York tri-state area and many of her licensed designs were available worldwide at fine stores and galleries.
Susan's work has evolved from her floral patterns into a new unique line of highly sophisticated contemporary one of a kind and limited edition designs which she calls Artifax Designs. She is using the ancient French technique called eglomise, which is reverse painting on glass on all of her platters, plates and bowls so that all of the pieces are not just decorative works of art but are functionsl as well.
The actual painting is done on the underside of the glass. To do this, she begins with clear glass which she considers to be her canvas and paints last things first and first things last. Step one is the skeleton of the design, next the colors are layered on and finally the background is painted. Each layer is fired on for permanence.
For the Artifax line Susan has chosen a limited, but rich color palette so that all of her pieces relate and can be combined in infinite ways. Her color choices and all of her designs are intuitive. She feels her designs have a kaleidoscopic quality. With each turn the images morph into new ones.
Artifax Designs seem to be evocative of many different cultures and artistic styles. Customers comment that the work is very Old World, comtemporary, Russian, Asian, Middle Eastern, African, European and Art Deco. None of these cultures or styles was Susan's inspiration, but the range of comparisons attests to the originality of the work.
As always, each and every piece is created and produced solely by Susan.
